Class 4

Additional Notes (A4)

Estoy feliz (de) estar aquí

I am happy to be here

There are 3 types of verbs in Spanish

Verbs that end in -ar, -er and -ir

Most of the lesson about

Ser vs. Estar

Can be found in Class 2 and Class 3

But it's so important we are doing

one last comparison.

Ser = to be (permanent)

Estar = to be (temporary)

dueño/dueña = owner

valiente = bold

Encargados/Encargadas = In charge

More literally, "the in charge ones"

Ustedes son las encargadas?

Are you all (y'all) in charge?

disponible = available, free

ocupado/ocupada = occupied, busy

Yo estoy en camino

I am on the way

Nosotros estamos ocupados

Notice the "s"

We are busy(s)

La chamba = the mix, the grind, the workflow

todo a gusto = everything is to our liking

mucho gusto = nice to meet you

la temporada alta = the high season

la temporada baja = the low season

From the Listening Exercise...

Invierno horrible = Horrible Winter

nieve = snow

viento = wind

frio = cold

Joven = young

Juventud = youth

Hay mucho calor = there's a lot of heat

It's very hot

Caliente = Hot

Mi temporada favorita = my favorite season

Semana santa = holy week

saint week

ahora = now

ahora es la hora = now is the time (hour)

Spanish speakers ask "What time is it?

as "What hour is it?"

Que hora es?

Es la una en la manana

It's one (hour) in the morning

"es" is not just "is"

let's think about its origin.

It comes from Ser

Es = he is/she is and, for our purposes, it is

So "es" only works in time-telling when it's

1am or 1pm

After that we need "they are"

because "they are" multiple hours.

They are, from Ser, is "Son"

So to say "it is two in the afternoon"

We literally say "they are two in the afternoon"

Son las dos en la tarde

Conjugating/Changing -AR Ending Verbs

Why do we conjugate verbs?

To make them match the subject and time frame

we want to be speaking about

How do we conjugate verbs?

We change the ending.

With -AR ending verbs we remove the -AR

and change the ending to communicate

the subject we are trying to speak about.

Example

Hablar

To speak (In the present)

Yo hablo = I speak

Tu hablas = You speak

El/Ella habla = He/She speaks

Nosotros hablamos = We speak

Ellos/Ellas or Ustedes hablan = They Speak

and Y'all speak

These rules are not just for Hablar

They are true for all verbs

that end in -AR

Example

Caminar

To walk

Yo camino = I walk

Tu caminas = You walk

El/Ella camina = He/She walks

Nosotros caminamos = We walk

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes caminan = They walk, Y'all walk

We are teaching our brain the rules

over time, with practice, you will

conjugate verbs more automatically
