Class 5

Additional Notes (A5 + Some A6)

Do you Speak Spanish?

Tu hablas Español?

Previously we talked about

how to say "this"

esta (feminine)

este (masculine)

esto (gender neutral)

add an "s" to make it "these"

estas

estes

estos

We also talked about

how to say "that"

esa

ese

eso

Add an "s" to make it "those"

esas

eses

esos

In talking about the direction "East"

We say "este" but notice from above that

"este" also is the masculine version of "this"

You'll have to use the context to differentiate

La costa oeste de Mexico

The west coast of Mexico

Notice that Mexico is pronounced

as if the X is an English "H"

Meh-he-co (phonetic)

"Mi paisano" is more common

to hear than "Mi paisana"

but language and gender roles evolve!

Especially now that the president

of Mexico is a woman!

Claudia Sheinbaum

The capital of Mexico is Mexico City

La capital de Mexico es la Ciudad de Mexico

"cah-pee-tahl" - Capital

Notice that the word for "border" is "frontera"

A good way to remember that would be

"frontier"

Compartir = to share

Comparte = "it shares", "he shares", "she shares"

Dar = to give

Me da gusto

That makes me glad

But that's not the literal translation

And that's a good reminder

that translations are not always exact or literal

De nada

"You're welcome"

but "de" means of/from

and "nada" means "nothing"

So I always think of de nada more like...

"think nothing of it"

Por favor

"Please"

I think of it more like...

"Out of favor"

Cuál = which

Cuál es tu nombre

which is your name?

What is your name?

One of two ways to ask someone's name

Response: Mi nombre es _________

My name is ___________

The more common way to

ask someone their name...

"Como te llamas"

How do you call yourself?

Response: Me llamo ____________

I call myself __________ (my name is)

llamar = to call

Video llamada = Video call"

Como se llama esto?

What is this called?

Literally - How does it call itself this?

Se llama ___________

It's called __________

Literally - It calls itself ___________

These are great tools for learning Spanish

in the real world from other Spanish speakers

Another tool for real world learning is

the word "decir" (to say, to tell)

Como se dice _______ en Español?

How do you say _______ in Spanish?

Literally - How does it say itself

Fill in the blank with an English word.

Ex. Como se dice pencil en Español?

Response: "se dice lápiz"

Todos los dias

All the days

This is how we say "everyday" in Spanish

Cada = Each

Cada dia

Each day

This is another way to say "Everyday" in Spanish

Spanish has a casual and formal way

to reference "you"

Tu = Casual

Usted = Formal

The verb form that you use to

communicate respect

is not the "tu" form that we've learned

Instead, choose the same verb form as he/she/it

Usted camina mucho?

(With respect) "Do you walk a lot"

De donde es usted?

(With respect) "Where are you from"

Remember, the casual way to ask

that same question would be...

De donde eres tu?

What is conjugating a verb?

Changing it to match the subject

and time frame that we want to communicate about

In Spanish, change the subject and time frame

by changing the ending of the verb.

Examples

Caminar

To walk

Yo Camino = I walk

Tu Caminas = You walk

El/Ella/Usted Camina = He/She/You Walk

Nosotros Caminamos = We walk

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes Caminan =

They walk, Y'all Walk

You don't memorize all the verbs.

Instead, your brain is memorizing rules about how to change a verb's ending to talk about the

right subject and time frame.

So notice how another -AR ending verb

"Hablar" (to speak) is totally different.

But changing the endings follows the same formula

Hablar

To speak/To talk

Yo Hablo = I speak

Tu Hablas = You speak

El/Ella/Usted Habla = He/She/You speaks

Nosotros Hablamos = We speak

Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes Hablan =

They speak, Y'all Speak

Conjugation is not about memorizing

a whole bunch of words.

It's about teaching your brain a set of rules

and eventually it will come natural to apply them.

A6

Even though the word "océano" means ocean

most Spanish speakers use the word "mar"

"mar" means "sea" but people use it

to talk about the ocean.

Ex. El Mar Pacifico

The Pacific Ocean
